Highway 17 Officially Opens

August 30, 2016

Local, state and federal representatives gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new four lane highway connecting Toccoa-Stephens County to I-85 in Lavonia.  Most of the four lane highway opened last week but there is still a small portion that remains two lane as they finish up construction.  That construction is expected to be complete in about three weeks.  The ribbon cutting was held in the Hayestone Brady Business Park near the new Nifco KTW industrial plant.  State Senator John Wilkinson, State Representative Dan Gasaway, County Commission Chairman Dennis Bell, Mayor Evan Hellenga and Stephens County Development Authority Chairman Brian Akin all spoke on the potential for economic growth thanks to the new highway.
