HAYESTONE BRADY BUSINESS PARK DEVELOPMENT SEES PROGRESS
Stephens County’s latest industrial park, which houses Caterpillar, Inc. and North Georgia Technical College’s Currahee Campus, is on its way to being developed. Long-awaited permits are now in hand, and final design alterations are being made to accommodate long-term maintenance concerns. Contractor bids are set to go out in March-April. The Business Park, which is being developed with SPLOST V funds, encompasses 320+ of available acres on GA-17 six miles from I-85. Truck route signs went up in January at the Park’s entrance.

HOPE REMAINS DESPITE NAMPAC CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENT
In January, BWAY Corporation announced that it will be closing its Stephens County NAMPAC plant in March, causing a loss of 90 jobs. The Toccoa facility has been manufacturing plastic containers since 1992. The loss will be sorely felt, yet hope remains for the local economy with the investment of new startups and existing industries. Industry investments since July 2009 total over $6 Million. Two new industries began operating in Stephens County in late 2009 –Wilbros Organic Recycling, a waste recycling company, and Currahee Group, a defense products manufacturer.

SCDA BOARD WELCOMES BOB TROUP, DEAN SCARBOROUGH
2010 brought two new faces to the SCDA Board -Toccoa's new Mayor Bob Troup, and the new Stephens County Commission Chairman, Dean Scarborough. They will replace former Mayor Ron Seib (SCDA Assistant Secretary) and Commission Chairman Harold Andrews (SCDA Vice-Chair), who served on the Board in 2009.

NGTC ENROLLMENT CONTINUES GROWTH TREND IN WINTER QUARTER
North Georgia Technical College’s enrollment figures for the 2010 Winter Quarter have set a new record, continuing the trend begun in the Fall of 2009. Figures show a 23 percent increase over 2009’s Winter Quarter enrollment. The school has implemented block scheduling and now offers more afternoon and evening courses in an effort to better accommodate the increase in students.
